National Volunteer Week: What it means to be a volunteer with CTN

National Volunteer Week is here and we will be recognizing and celebrating our volunteers at Children’s Treatment Network (CTN).

Here is one story of a new volunteer who is also one of our clients. After attending our summer camp for teens, Maria, who’s in grade 10, asked how she could get involved with CTN in a volunteer role. We were thrilled to have her attend and support our Richmond Hill Halloween party last fall. Here is why volunteering matters to her.

I’m 15 years old, living in Markham with a physical disability. Children’s Treatment Network (CTN) gave me the opportunity to volunteer at a Halloween party for children with disabilities who find trick-or-treating outdoors challenging. Volunteering made me feel included and valued. Other volunteers and parents made it easy for me to navigate around the space in my wheelchair and helped me get my job done. I had the opportunity to make crafts with the kids, help in the gym with bowling activities and even took a turn handing out non-edible treats to the kids! While volunteering and helping out others, I felt as if I was also giving back to myself. I had to step out of my comfort zone; sometimes speaking up in a busy environment and being a leader can be challenging for me. During the evening, I felt appreciated and encouraged! Overall, volunteering gave back to others but was also a benefit to myself!

Thank you to Maria and to our team of more than 100 volunteers who regularly support CTN in various roles as members of our Board of Directors, Family Engagement Council, Social Media Working Group, special event support, and as Family Mentors. Generously donating their time allows the network to not only move forward with input directly from youth and parents who are active volunteers, but also helps CTN to provide families with the supports, information and opportunities they need across Simcoe County and York Region.

Happy Volunteer Week to all of our volunteers who makes a difference at CTN!
