A Day of Family Fun: Blue Mountain Offers Adapted Recreation for Kids with Disabilities

CTN’s Community and Family Coordinators (CFCs) have partnered with the Blue Mountain adapted recreation team to increase recreation opportunities for kids and youth with disabilities and developmental needs and their families.

In 2020, Blue Mountain and CTN partnered to host several “try-it-on” recreation events to showcase the adaptive skiing opportunities available in the village during the winter. During the pandemic, these events were put on hold. With many CTN in-person events resuming, CTN’s CFCs and Blue Mountain Adaptive Specialists, Josh and Jack, planned a CTN Inclusive Recreation Day at Blue Mountain for families to experience the various outdoor spring/summer/fall activities.

On Sunday, September 25th, families arrived from across Simcoe County and York Region to learn what Blue Mountain offered to increase accessibility and what activities and adaptations would best support their individual needs and interests. The kids, youth and their families then spent the day trying the ropes courses, mountain roller coaster, canopy climb net, mini golf, hiking and more.

This event was so great. I don’t think my kids have been that active without complaints since we went to Disneyland! Amazing staff and volunteers helped make the day so awesome. - CTN parent

Thank you so much. It was a great day. So nice to get to explore with such helpful volunteers and staff. We tried more things than we ever would have just on our own.

Our first Inclusive Recreation Day was a success, and we look forward to continuing to evolve and build on our partnership with the Blue Mountain Adaptive Team to provide future opportunities for families.
