During Pride Month many people around the world celebrate identity, community and the ongoing pursuit of inclusion and equity for all. It is observed in June to remember the activism from the June 1969 Stonewall riots in New York City. Pride is both joyful and meaningful. It’s an opportunity to recognize the diversity, strength and resilience of 2SLGBTQI+ communities, including colleagues, families, friends, neighbours and the kids, youth and families we support. Thursday, June 18th is Autistic Pride Day, an important day to recognize and celebrate neurodiversity, while promoting acceptance, inclusion and respect for individuals with autism. This month also encourages those who may not identify as part of the 2SLGBTQI+ community to reflect and grow. Being an ally is an ongoing journey that includes learning, asking questions and speaking out against discrimination. By better understanding the experiences of 2SLGBTQI+ communities, we can help create spaces that are inclusive, affirming and safe for everyone.
Supporting 2SLGBTQI+ communities can take many forms, including attending local events, learning more about lived experiences and showing up as an ally in everyday moments. Below are some resources that you and your family can explore to support your learning.
As we celebrate Pride Month in June, we also recognize National Indigenous History Month. Two-Spirit (2S) is an identity that has long held social, cultural and spiritual significance in some Indigenous communities. It’s important to recognize the experiences of 2S individuals and the Indigenous Peoples who are also celebrating their queer identities. By celebrating Pride and recognizing all identities, we honour diversity, foster belonging and support a world where everyone can feel proud to be themselves.
