October is a time to recognize several awareness months that connect to the kids, youth and families we serve. These months help build understanding, reduce stigmas and highlight the importance of inclusion, accessibility and support.
Autism Acceptance is about recognizing and valuing the different and unique ways that individuals with autism experience the world. It encourages understanding, helps reduce stigma and supports everyone to be themselves. CTN offers monthly webinars for families in Simcoe County and York Region who recently received an autism diagnosis for their child or youth.
You can also read a personal reflection from CTN team member and parent, Niki Huxtable, who shares what acceptance means to her and what she wants others to know: The A Word – What It Really Means To Me.
Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) Awareness Month highlights the many ways people communicate beyond spoken words. Pictures, gestures, communication boards and technology are some of the different tools people may use to support their communication. These tools help many kids and youth express themselves and connect with others. Explore the Speech, Language and Communication section of the Online Resource Centre to access communication resources, including our new Ready, Set, Go! Simple Speech Tips for Kids video series, which was developed in partnership with other service provider organizations. You can also learn more about AAC services at CTN.
ADHD Awareness Month is a chance to build understanding and reduce the stigma associated with ADHD. This month reminds us to recognize the different strengths, needs and ways of learning that individuals may have. By fostering awareness, we can help create communities where everyone has the opportunity to succeed.
Healthy vision supports how kids learn, play and explore the world around them. Children’s Vision Awareness Month is a reminder that early eye exams can help identify vision concerns and support a child's development.
Dwarfism Awareness Month celebrates the contributions of people with dwarfism while promoting understanding, inclusion and respect. It encourages meaningful conversations about equal rights, helps amplify the voices of individuals with dwarfism and reminds us of the importance of creating accessible and welcoming spaces for people of all sizes.
Learning disabilities (LD) can affect how someone takes in, remembers or uses information. LD Awareness Month helps increase understanding and encourages support so kids, youth and adults can reach their potential and feel included and supported by others. CTN is proud to be a SmartStart Hub in Simcoe County and York Region, helping families find the right services and supports for their child’s development.
October is a time to celebrate occupational therapists (OTs) and the important role they play in helping kids and youth participate in everyday activities at home, school and in the community. Visit CTN’s Online Resource Centre for resources that support fine motor skills, strength development, sensory needs, self-regulation and more.
Rett Syndrome is a rare genetic disorder that affects how a child’s brain works and can impact movement, communication and daily activities. October is a time to learn more about this condition and show support for individuals experiencing Rett Syndrome and their families.
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) Awareness Month raises awareness about safe sleep practices and ways to support infant health and safety.
