Read about awareness months in October.

Throughout October, several awareness months are recognized that reflect the diverse needs of the kids, youth and families supported by Children’s Treatment Network (CTN). These awareness campaigns highlight the importance of early intervention, accessibility, inclusion and understanding for a range of developmental and health-related needs.

Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month in Canada

Autism Acceptance is about understanding and valuing the differences of people on the autism spectrum. It helps break down stereotypes, reduce stigma and support people to be themselves. CTN has monthly webinars for families in Simcoe County and York Region who have a child or youth recently diagnosed with autism.

Hear from a CTN team member and parent of a son with autism as she shares what acceptance means to her and what she wants others to know. Read the article: The A Word – What It Means To Me

National Occupational Therapy Month

October is a time to celebrate the vital role occupational therapists (OTs) play in supporting kids and youth at CTN. Through everyday activities focused on family, fun, fitness, friends and the future, OTs help promote health, well-being and participation at home, school and in the community. Visit CTN’s Online Resource Centre for downloadable resources on core strength, fine motor skills, sensory self-regulation and more.

Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) Awareness Month

AAC Awareness Month helps people learn about the many ways we can talk without using spoken words. From pictures to tools that use technology, AAC is very important for many kids and youth at CTN. Explore our Online Resource Centre for speech, language and communication resources, or check out our Speech Development Tips video series which supports families in preparing their child for speech therapy. Learning Disabilities (LD) Awareness Month

Did you know a learning disability can affect how someone takes in, remembers or uses information? LD Awareness Month helps people understand learning disabilities better so kids and adults can get the help they need to feel supported and included. CTN is proud to be a SmartStart Hub in Simcoe County and York Region. This is a starting point to help families navigate services and find the right support for their child’s development.

ADHD Awareness Month

ADHD Awareness Month is an opportunity to increase understanding of ADHD and reduce stigma. With the right supports, individuals with ADHD can thrive. Let’s recognize the different ways people experience and manage ADHD and support them in ways that work for them.

Children's Vision Awareness Month

Good vision is important for how kids learn and grow. Children’s Vision Awareness Month reminds us how early eye exams can help find vision problems and support healthy eyes for life.

Rett Syndrome Awareness Month

Rett Syndrome is a rare genetic disorder that affects how a child’s brain works and how they grow. October is a time to learn about this condition and support families living with it.

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Awareness Month

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) Awareness Month is a time to raise awareness of SIDS and to promote safe sleep for babies.
