Who should attend? Parents and Caregivers
YSSN in collaboration with Sunbeam Community and Developmental Services invites caregivers to an in-person Spring Autism Education Series: Learn from a BCBA-Autism Specialist. Two presentations will be held simultaneously to meet the needs of all our caregivers, mix and match the workshop that best meet your needs, a similar opportunity will be available Fall 2024. Light refreshments will be served. Event Details: Monday, June 17, 2024 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Classroom One: Motivation and Reinforcement (10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.) In this workshop caregivers will learn the differences between reinforcement and punishment, as well as learn what reinforcement is and how this impacts behaviour. Information will be shared on how to establish motivation with your child/youth and use motivation for learning new skills. There will be some discussion on the reasons we engage in certain behaviours (the functions of behaviour); whether it is to escape a task, gain attention, access items etc.

Classroom One: Generalization and Maintenance (1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.) This workshop will help caregivers understand the importance of generalizing a skill (ex. saying "hi") to other people and locations. Generalizing a skill is important for various reasons; after you teach a skill to your child you would want them to also perform that skill with other people and in different situations/ environments. This workshop will focus on what is generalization, maintenance, why are they so important and the difference between the two? We will also discuss tips that caregivers can use in their day-to-day life to teach generalization to their child. Register for this workshop here Classroom Two: Antecedents and Setting (10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.) This workshop will focus on the environment’s effect on behaviour. Proactive strategies that can be used to prevent challenging behaviour and build independence will be discussed. Register for this workshop here Classroom Two: Managing Challenging Behaviours (1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.) This parent training workshop will focus on the various principles used in ABA to reduce challenging behaviours. The why’s, what’s and how’s of the following topics: The 4 functions of behaviour, antecedent strategies, replacement behaviours and consequence strategies. Register for this workshop here
