Who should attend? Parents and Caregivers
The focus of this workshop is to explore how parents and caregivers have been coping with the mental health implications of having to care for someone with an autism diagnosis. This workshop will explore healthy and unhealthy coping strategies. Core themes of this workshop may include perceptions of self-care in the South Asian community, family boundaries, and communication, & societal perceptions of gender-related caregiver roles. Presenters Bio Maneet Chahal (RN, BScN, MSc) & Jasmeet Chagger (RN, BScN, MSc(c)) are two passionate community change-makers. They have over 8 years of mental health nursing experience and have closely witnessed their family and friends struggle with mental illness. Along with working in the field of mental health, Maneet finished her Masters of Nursing in 2018 which looked at the South Asian Punjabi community's experience of accessing mental health services for depression in the Region of Peel. Jasmeet’s Masters of Science in Nursing thesis explores the perceptions of alcohol use and the experience of Punjabi families impacted by problem drinking. SOCH is a community mental health initiative aimed at breaking the silence about mental health in South Asian families.
