Day 1 of Autism Ontario - Caregiver Workshop: ABA Strategies

Who should attend?    Parents and Caregivers

During the two-day workshop, participants will learn about using the principles of Applied Behaviour Analysis to teach various skills.   Video- taped illustrations, modeling, and role-playing examples of effective teaching strategies will be utilized throughout the workshop. Participants will learn how to teach individuals with autism various life skills such as: 

  • Basic principles of Applied Behaviour Analysis including prompts and reinforcement. 
  • Toileting skills for daytime and nighttime: how to teach toilet training skills to individuals with autism.
  • Independent leisure/play skills: how to increase independent play skills by teaching how to play with various toys, in addition to making the toys valuable in themselves to the child wants to play with them.
  • Eating skills: how to decrease food selectivity as well as how to teach various skills such as using utensils, drinking from a cup, etc. 
  • Behaviour management: discuss the functions of behaviour, how to identify why the behaviour is occurring (function), as well as strategies to decrease problem behaviour in a variety of settings. 
  • Sleeping skills including bedtime routines and wake-ups
  • How to teach basic communication skills: how to request highly preferred items using vocal speech, sign language, or an augmentative device  
About the Presenter - Jennifer Donnelly, MADS, BCBA:
Jennifer has received her Master of Applied Disability Studies from Brock University and is a Board Certified Behaviour Analyst. She has worked with individuals with autism and other developmental disabilities since 1999, utilizing the principles of Applied Behaviour Analysis with a special emphasis on Verbal Behaviour. She has experience working with a wide range of learners providing consultation and instruction, as well as presenting workshops to parents, teachers, and professionals. Jennifer has been with George Brown College since 2009 where she is the Coordinator and Professor of the Behavioural Sciences Technology (post graduate) Program, as well as the Autism & Behavioural Sciences (post graduate) Program. In addition, she has a clinical private practice where she provides workshops and consultative services to families, private ABA centres and schools in Canada, USA, and abroad.
  • Child care will not be provided.
  • Light snacks and refreshments will be served.
